Geoff Johns Wants to Build DCEU’s Batman Universe Like the Comics

DC Films’ Geoff Johns says the DC Extended Universe is planning to build Batman’s corner of the universe with offshoots for his supporting characters just like how it is in the comic booksn. In a recent interview on IGN Live, Johns teased the possibility of eventually bringing together all the characters significantly tied to Batman on the big screen:

“We haven’t gone out there and said what our slate is and that’s because we’ll do it when we’re ready and we have the films that we’re excited about. But for Batman, what I will say is that Batman is more than just Batman and, you know, it’s been way too long since we’ve seen an expansion of that universe, and Batgirl – we are doing Batgirl with Joss Whedon, it’s going to be super exciting. He’s going to start that next year, and that’s just the start. We want to explore the Batman universe in a very big new way and Matt Reeves is coming on to do Batman now, and we don’t want to do the same thing that has been done before. We want to build it out just like we built it out in the comics.”

On top of Batgirl, which will be in development starting next year, a Nightwing film written by Bill Dubuque and directed by Chris McKay has also been in the works at Warner Bros. That said, there are still a slew of other characters that can be brought to life in Batman’s own extended universe like Batwoman, Catwoman, The Spoiler, Bluebird, Robin, Red Hood, Red Robin and maybe even an appearance from Ace the Bat-Hound.

YES, PLEASE.

Standing beside the Bat Signal with a rookie police officer, watching grappling hooks fly past them from one ancient Gotham City skyscraper onto another…

Commissioner Gordon: Listen to them. Children of the night. What music they make.

So, I’ve got a pretty big pile of old and new DC comic issues waiting to be read.

And I just realized how invested I’ve become in all those fictional characters (glaring at you, Batfamily).

I may be kind of… possibly… sort of been putting ‘em off because I need to… prepare myself. Emotionally.

And I’ll see spoilers on Tumblr now and then. But, instead of being annoyed, I just either get nervous or excited, all the while hearing the pile figuratively call to me.

And now as the pile keeps growing, the time to read ‘em is also shrinking. :)))

a-wayne-at-heart:

My dream Batman canon issue: ALL the four Batboys (Dick, Jason, Tim, Damian) and Cass coming out of their respective bedrooms at the Manor in their sleep civvies, woken by the scent of Alfred’s cooking; each getting to the kitchen in his/her own Extra way, playfully but competitively shoving each other out of the way; Tim breaking off from the chaos to open the door, high-fiving/fist-bumping Duke and Luke as they file in; Babs arriving two minutes later, on the phone with Steph, telling the latter to come ASAP (breakfast is almost served); Kate coming in much later, amused by the loud morning chatter, nodding at Bruce, who’s seated at a kitchen stool, patting Titus on the head while Alfred the cat purrs on his lap.

I dunno. Something incredibly MUNDANE like this when Tim comes back. We already had Batburger, and that was lovely. Just… It would be great if they were ALL there.

Selina coming in through a second story window; Basil catching up with Cass and Harper, telling them how Jean-Paul’s meditating on a mountain somewhere so he can’t make it, while Alfred mops up his clay trail. Maybe Clark and Lois (literally) flying in to drop Jon off for a sleepover with Damian.

Too much to ask?

The Batkids discussing retirement from the vigilante life (“What if?” scenarios)…

Jason: Hey, you guys in the Batcave all know what you want to do. You know? You have goals. You have dreams. I don’t have a dream.

Dick: Ah, the lesser known “I Don’t Have a Dream” speech.

Batman finally finding out the location of Red Hood’s newest safe house…

Jason: So how’d you convince the whole family to betray me? What’d you offer them?

Bruce: I asked them if they wanted to embarrass you, and they instantly said yes.

Jason: I’m not gonna lie, that turns me on a little bit.
